We are thrilled to welcome Margaret Glaspy to School of Song! She will be teaching a four-week songwriting workshop starting October 12th, 2025 for musicians, fans, and music lovers alike.

Some of the topics will include:

  • Creative Stamina: Drawing from her experience and background in Buddhist practices, Margaret will share techniques of mindfulness meditation to build creative stamina. By “cutting out the middle man” (aka the self-critic) we will work toward achieving and sustaining longer durations of flow state in our creative practice.
  • Finding the Song Within the Song: “Sometimes a student comes to me with a song they’ve written and says “I don’t know what this means!” We’ll explore Margaret’s approach to conjuring the deeper meaning within our songs by asking a series of questions that flip between personal and universal perspective.
  • Explorative Editing: Here’s an example from Margaret’s process: Write one version of a song. Two days later, write a completely different version of the same song. Changing the chords, time signature, and feel but keeping the lyrics. Take just the bridge from the new version and retroactively apply it to the original. This approach searches to add dimension and depth to the emotional center of the song.
  • Guitar Toolbox: How can we advance our skills on the instrument to be in service of songwriting? Margaret will share her key moments of growth and discovery as a guitarist and how she arrived at developing her own musical vocabulary, not by ignoring fretboard theory, but embracing it!

Here are a few words from Margaret on the course:

Bob Dylan, Nina Simone, Sly Stone, Elliott Smith - these are some of the musicians that have shaped my ears and mind. They have taught me about love, politics, loss, injustice - all through song. In my own practice of songwriting over the last 15 years, confidence and creative stamina have slowly grown within me to tell my own stories in song. That process has been a constant practice of finding ways to create my own vocabularies both lyrically and instrumentally. I’m honored to be in service to you, my fellow songwriters, in your pursuit to do the same.

FAQ:

Q: What musical experience should I have?
A: People across all musical levels will be able to gain something from the course.
Q: What if I've never written a song before? Can I still participate in this workshop?
A: Yes! As with any new skill, just starting is usually the hardest part. The songs are optional and this workshop will provide the structure and accountability we all need to get started and follow through, for beginners and old guard writers alike.
Q: Is there an enrollment cap?
A: Nope! This is a lecture-style class with open enrollment. The song shares will be optional with breakout rooms of 3-4 people.
Q: Will Margaret give me feedback on my songs?
A: Due to the class size, we cannot guarantee that you'll get Margaret's feedback on your songs. However, our teachers are active on our song sharing platform and may leave comments on students' submissions.
Q: I can't make the lecture times for some (or all) of the classes. Can I still participate?
A: Yes! We send out the recordings of lectures at the end of each class day, so you can watch the lectures on your own time.
