Philip Weinrobe is returning to School of Song for the second iteration of the Mixing Lab starting November 3rd. Philip is known for his work with artists like Adrianne Lenker, Billie Marten, Lonnie Holley, Florist, Hand Habits, Cass McCombs, and many more.
This class offers an in-depth look into Philip's mixing process, taught in real-time through “from-scratch” mixes of four songs. Participants will receive stems of each song and get practical experience by mixing their own versions to share with, and get feedback from, the class.
Whether you're just starting out or are a professional looking for fresh perspectives, this class is designed to enhance your skills for any mixing situation. We will cover everything from essential practical workflow processes, creating and maintaining a narrative arc, emotional string-pulling, and sustaining the listener's attention. We will explore concepts such as sidechain, parallel processing, harmonic distortion, compression, automation, transient shaping, glue, and much more.
Each week, aside from the main sessions, we'll conduct Q&As for addressing your specific questions and concerns about your mixes. Plus, you'll be paired with a "Mix Buddy" to exchange feedback on your homework assignment mixes, fostering a collaborative learning environment.
The only prerequisite for this class is to have some experience working in a DAW so you can follow along during the class and complete the assignments. We’ll also hold office hours to help get you unstuck if you run into technical issues.

FAQ:
-
Q: What gear do I need to take this class?
A: To get the most out of this class, you’ll need the following:
- computer with a fully featured Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) such as Logic, Pro Tools, Ableton, Reaper, Cubase, or Studio One. GarageBand will be insufficient for this class.
- headphones (and optionally studio monitors) to listen back to your mixes
-
Q: How much mixing experience do I need to take this class?
A: While you don't need "mixing" experience per se, it'll be useful to know how to navigate a DAW. This will help you
We will have office hours (times TBA) with teaching assistants specifically to help students troubleshoot their mixing setups. Do not let fear of technical difficulties stop you from signing up – we are here to help everyone.
Q: I can’t make the session time. Do I need to participate in this class live?
A: All classes are recorded and sent out after class. You do not need to be able to attend the live session in order to participate in the class.
Q: How many students are in the class?
A: There is no cap on enrollment. However, we will be scaling the teacher staff with the number of enrollees to ensure that everyone who needs help with technical troubleshooting has it.
Q: Is there a minimum age requirement?
A: You must be at least 18 to attend the class. We make exceptions on a case-by-case basis; email us at hi@schoolofsong.org.
Q: Will Philip give me feedback on my mixes?
A: While we can't promise Philip will be able to give feedback on every mix, there will be opportunities during the Q+A to ask Philip specific questions about your mix.
Q: I'm in Europe and cannot make the live session or Q&A times.
A: We’re aware that the session and Q&A times are unrealistic for our European students for this offering. However, they are recorded and sent out afterwards. Whenever possible, we try to offer multiple sections of a class so that everyone can attend, but we were unable to in this case. If you cannot make the Q&A, questions can be pre-submitted, and we will prioritize questions from people who cannot make the live Q&A.
If after the first class you feel the course is not a good fit for any reason, you are welcome to a refund on the rest of the course classes. We are unable to process refunds after the second class.
