In this course, we will work to deepen our individual lyrical voices. Through a combination of studying and analyzing the lyrics of the greats as well as dissecting the lyrics of our own personal heroes, we will work to understand what we love about certain lyricists and integrate their approaches into our own lyrical style. Through a series of exercises, games, and in-class writing activities, we will generate material in class, providing you with the dedicated space and accountability to push yourself to finish the lyrics of both new ideas and any incomplete songs you have kicking around.
Topics covered:
- Rhyme Schemes and Patterns
- Perspective
- Storytelling
- Character Development
- Emotional Clarity
- The Role of Cliche
Prerequisites:
Open to all levels. However, it will be helpful to be comfortable playing a few basic chords on any instrument of your choice.
