Waking Up Your Ears (November '23)

Eight (8) 75-minute classes, twice a week. Limited enrollment.

Taught in a live, interactive classroom setting on Zoom

• Tuesdays and Fridays, 5:00p - 6:15p (PT)
• November 28th; December 1st, 5th, 8th, 12th, 15th, 19th, 22nd.
• Classes are recorded and sent out after class. You do not have to be able to attend every class live to sign up.

This is a mapmaking journey into pitch for all levels, with the goal of orienting your ears and voices in everyday life. The colors and characters of the twelve notes will become old friends and take on new meaning whenever you listen to music, play your instrument, sing, and write.

Topics covered:

• Finding the tonal center
• Hearing scale degrees in musical context
• Transcribing melodies to your voice and instrument through close listening
• Identifying intervals both “vertically” and “horizontally”
• Understanding the flavors of common chords

This course requires no previous knowledge of music theory. We will cover the basic principles necessary to achieve our ear-training goals, but mostly stay out of those weeds and in our bodies. There will be no notation.
