All access to lecture recordings, songwriting prompts and all course materials for Robin Pecknold's songwriting workshop taught in January 2022. By purchasing this past course, you're able to watch Robin's lectures and go about the course at your own pace!

Robin's lectures cover the following topics and themes:

    1. Melody & Lyrics: Stravinsky once said that melody is the only aspect of music that can’t be taught, but in this class we’ll give it our best shot, looking at various means of melodic development, the importance of rhythm to memorability, interval relationships, utilizing extensions and common tones, and techniques for writing melodies that accommodate harmonization. We will also explore the relationship between melody and lyrics.
    2. Process & Manifestos: In this class, we’re going to take a look at the full life-cycle of a song’s creation: how to come up with musical and lyrical ideas, achieving consistency by establishing a musical vision early on, and understanding the many different hats we have to wear as songwriters.
    3. Utilizing musical ‘technologies’ for defamiliarization: A song can (and should) start from anything, be it an unfamiliar instrument, a new plug-in or app, a strange tuning or harmonic mode, a YouTube video, a sample, or any number of things. In this class we’ll discuss the difference between songcraft and the employment of these novel technologies, and the importance of both to the creative process
    4. Attention & Novelty: How can we best rise to the occasion of maintaining a listener’s attention? We’ll discuss this question at many timescales: over the course of a song, throughout an album, & over an entire career. We’ll talk about solving the problem of managing expectations and surprise.

This course also includes songwriting prompts from Robin such as "The Archaeologist", "The Elaborator", "The Magpie", and "The Believer".

    -- Testimonial from January 2022 students --

" I am so so so so so grateful for School of Song and for Robin's willingness and excitement to run this workshop. I unfortunately chose to do this class (because it's with ROBIN!!!!) at a time where I couldn't follow through on homework, but I learned so much that I am looking forward to applying and experimenting with over the next few months, and am SO GRATEFUL!"

    This "Past Course" includes:

    1. Class Video Recordings – Watch all 4 of Robin Pecknold's lectures + Q&A's on his songwriting process.
    2. All course materials, including songwriting prompts crafted by Robin.
    3. Access to the "community jukebox" – upload your new songs to the jukebox and share the tunes with fellow classmates!

Q: What musical experience is required to understand the material in this course?

A: People across all musical levels will be able to gain something from the course. However, it will be helpful to be comfortable playing a few basic chords on any instrument of your choice in order to complete the songwriting prompts.

Q: What if I’ve never written a song before? Can I still participate in this workshop?

A: Yes! As with any new skill, just starting is usually the hardest part. This workshop will provide the structure and accountability we all need to get started and follow through, for beginners and old guard writers alike.

Q: What is different about watching this past course versus participating while the workshop is run live?

A: By purchasing this course, you'll have access to the same resources as the students who took the course while it was running other than the live songshares.
