Taught in a live online classroom setting. Here is how the course works:

  1. We’ll meet 4 consecutive Sundays (January 8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th - 2023) for lectures with Scott McMicken (of Dr. Dog). There are 2 lecture sessions on each class day to accommodate different time zones.

    11:00am-12:00pm PST

    6:00pm-7:00pm PST

You can attend whichever works best for you. There’s no need (/no way) to indicate which time you’d like at checkout. Information for attending the lectures will be sent out the week before the first class. If you can’t make either lecture time, the lectures will also be recorded and sent out afterwards.

Additionally, for the first day of classes (January 8th), we’ve added a bonus hour of class time (10a-11a and 5p-6p for each respective lecture) where Scott will lead us in writing a song together live in class. This extra class time is optional, but we strongly encourage you to attend if you can.

  1. Every week, we’ll cover some of the topics below. Scott will give a lecture and live Q&A on the subject. Each week will include a homework assignment to write a song using the techniques discussed in the lecture.

  2. In addition to the lectures with Scott, we will have weekly song-sharing sessions where we share & provide feedback on the songs we’ve written for homework in small peer groups and an additional hour of live Q+A with Scott. The Q+A's will also all be recorded and sent out via email.

    • The song share times will be on Saturdays at 11a-12p, 3p-4p, and 6p-7p PST (January 14th, 21st and 28th).

    • The live Q+A will be on Wednesdays at 6p-7p PT (January 11th, 18th and 25th)

  3. The deadline to sign up is Sunday, January 8th at 11:59pm (PST).

  4. Sign up with a friend to receive a 20% discount by clicking here. *note* if you sign up using the discount and end up not being able to take the course, we cannot issue a refund, but you will be provided a credit for any future songwriting workshop.

hello my name is scott mcmicken.  i am really excited and intrigued by this opportunity to explore the finer points of the songwriting experience in the group setting. at the end of the day that, to me, is ultimately a look at life and self in the broadest sense.  to go there communally strikes me as a rare gem of an opportunity! together we’ll explore questions like… why do we write songs? what truly informs our judgment? how has your own personal genre developed? what roles does fear play? who are we serving? what would happen if we tried to write a song no one would hear? what is the purest form of your intention?

i feel that a group situation is a great way to take some chances,  enter the hall of mirrors, and together provide for one another a place to experience first hand that theres nothing to really fear.  and that failure can be as much a chance to laugh as it is a devastating blow to the foundation. im really excited for this chance to dig in with you all and lead from the vantage point of one with much to learn and much to let go of.  here's to the pursuit of a freer more fearless soul!   scott mcmicken

This course will cover several different pillars of songwriting such as:

  • silencing the mob of voices in our heads
  • identifying who we are serving when we write
  • creating by responding
  • embracing the framework of genre
  • honing in on our personal “presets”

Q: What musical experience should I have?

A: People across all musical levels will be able to gain something from the course. However, it will be helpful to be comfortable playing a few basic chords on any instrument of your choice. Additionally, this course will include some references to terms in music theory. However, none of the takeaways of this course will hinge on prerequisite music theory knowledge, and whenever such references are made, we’ll include supplemental instructional material on those subjects.

Q: What if I’ve never written a song before? Can I still participate in this workshop?

A: Yes! As with any new skill, just starting is usually the hardest part. This workshop will provide the structure and accountability we all need to get started and follow through, for beginners and seasoned songwriters alike.

Q: How much does it cost to enroll?

A: Enrollment is $120. If you sign up with a friend, you’ll both receive 20% off.

Q: How many students are in the class?

A: There is no enrollment cap.

Q: Is there a minimum age requirement?

A: Students must be 18 or older.

Q: Will Scott give me feedback on my songs?

A: You’ll be learning from Scott during the lectures and have the opportunity to ask questions throughout the course, but you will not be receiving direct feedback on your submissions from Scott. However, you’ll receive feedback on every submission from your peers during our weekly song-sharing sessions.
