If you’ve played guitar for long enough, you have certainly encountered the enticing mystery that is alternate tuning. Changing our tuning offers us an opportunity to see the guitar in a new light by leaving the safety of our familiar chord-shapes… not to mention it sounds really cool.
In this class, we will examine traditional open-tuning repertoire as well as works in alternate tunings from modern guitarists. We will also look at alternate tuning through a song-writing lens, and how it changes our approach to the fretboard.
Topics covered:
- Learn classic and modern repertoire
- Practical theory for approaching alternate tuning
- Composing original guitar parts using alternate tuning
- Slide playing and other techniques specific to open tuning
- Creating your own tunings
- The subtleties and subjective side of intonation
Prerequisites:
- Open position chords
- Familiarity with reading TABS
- Basic music theory knowledge (i.e. you know where the half steps are in a major scale)
