In this course students will learn to create more unique and compelling guitar arrangements. Each student will share original guitar parts to four recorded prompts and discuss the various musical elements that go into arranging for guitar. We will also touch on key music theory concepts and examine excerpts from artists including Sonic Youth, Big Thief, Deerhoof, Pixies, Mdou Moctar, and more. Weekly recording prompts and in-class discussions give students the benefit of participating in a community of avid guitarists.

This course is perfect for beginner and intermediate students who are ready to apply their fretboard knowledge, as well as more advanced players looking for new approaches and fresh sounds.

Topics covered:

  • Tone, effect, and range

  • Recording techniques for guitar

  • Rhythm and form

  • The basics of voice-leading and counterpoint

  • Slides, bends, and other expressive techniques

  • Cultivating air-tight right hand technique

  • Common scale patterns and chord voicings
